Asset Registers
What is an Asset Register?
An Asset Register is a formal record of the land, buildings, equipment, and other items owned or managed by the Parish Council. Assets can include (but are not limited to) play areas, open spaces, street furniture, buildings, vehicles, equipment, and memorials.
The register typically records:
- A description of each asset
- Its location
- Approximate value (for accounting purposes)
- Date of acquisition and, where relevant, disposal
Why does the Parish Council keep an Asset Register?
Parish councils are expected to maintain an up-to-date Asset Register as part of good governance, transparency, and sound financial management. Keeping an Asset Register helps to:
- Demonstrate proper stewardship of public assets
- Support accurate accounting and audit requirements
- Assist with insurance and risk management
- Inform decision-making about maintenance, replacement, or disposal of assets
- Provide transparency to residents about what the Council owns and manages on their behalf
